October 15, 2024

By Juliet Hidalgo

Dear LACCD Colleagues,

By now you may have heard of the incident at Santa Monica College that occurred last night.  Reports are that a SMC staff member was shot in an isolated workplace violence incident.  On behalf of the District’s Board of Trustees and Administration, we offer our deepest sympathies and support to the victim, who remains hospitalized and in critical condition, and the impacted families and students.

These unforeseen violent and untimely incidences cause us to reflect on our own campus safety and security.  Ensuring the safety and welfare of our students, faculty, and staff remains an unwavering, top priority.  We remain closely coordinated with our District’s safety and security unit at all times.  In our day and age, sustaining vigilance is absolutely necessary—if you see something, say something.

Each senseless act of violence affects us all, and in the wake of the tragic incident at our sister college, we want to remind you of the resources available to you and the LACCD community.  If you need support, with confidence, please access the Employee Assistance Program and TELUS Health EAP (formerly LifeWorks) at (800) 581-1485 or one.telushealth.com.

Thank you for your attention to this matter,

Sincerely,
